ABOUT US
The CURRV Initiative integrates climate science and resilience planning into existing programs and projects at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR). An interdepartmental commitment leverages existing internal and external partners to work towards increasing resilience to coastal hazards throughout the Tijuana River Valley and Watershed, Southern California, and beyond.
National Estuarine Research Reserves provide place-based platforms for innovation
Through the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) we advance on-the-ground adaptation to climate change across the country by integrating climate science into applied management of natural resources and community planning. By elevating climate change in the Tijuana River Reserve’s well-established programs, we’re able to advance climate and resilience science and planning from multiple angles, including research, education, training, restoration and stewardship. This ensures a holistic approach and demonstrates how to mainstream climate change into an organization’s programming, maximizing the impact throughout the region and the NERR System as a whole.
Linking resilience to restoration
In particular, as part of the Initiative, the Reserve has committed to restoring the Tijuana Estuary in the context of the best-available climate science. This approach ensures expected climatic and environmental change is integrated into the planning and design phases of the ongoing restoration of hundreds of acres of threatened coastal habitats through the Tijuana Estuary Tidal Restoration Program (TETRP).
Successful collaboration broadens impact
As a first-of-its kind Initiative in the NERR System, the team has been successful in helping to leverage over $6 million dollars and has built a network of 75+ partners. Initiative partners continue to work together to strengthen the Reserve's capacity to lead and engage in local and regional resilience planning, and to implement proactive adaptation solutions. Additionally, the Initiative focuses on broadening its reach by being leaders in regional collaboration networks like the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative.
